What Coverage a Tesla Model Y Actually Needs

State minimum liability limits were written for a different era of vehicle values. On a car where a single collision claim routinely runs five figures, the coverage decisions that matter are mostly about limits and endorsements, not about the carrier.

Liability: 100/300/100 is the practical floor

State minimums are typically 25/50/25 or lower, meaning $25,000 per injured person and $25,000 in property damage. A single at-fault collision involving another EV or a late-model truck can exceed the property-damage limit alone. Raising to 100/300/100 usually costs $150 to $300 a year and is the highest-value dollar in the entire policy.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist

Roughly one in seven US drivers carries no insurance, and in several states it is closer to one in four. If an uninsured driver damages your Model Y, UMPD and UIM are what pay for the aluminum structural work and sensor calibration. Match your UM and UIM limits to your liability limits.

Deductible strategy, asymmetric on purpose

Take a higher collision deductible, $1,000 or more, because collision claims are less frequent and the premium savings are substantial. Keep your comprehensive deductible low, $250 to $500, because the glass roof, camera-equipped windshield and exposed sensors make comprehensive claims disproportionately likely on this vehicle.

Endorsement 1: original equipment parts

Sold as Original Parts Replacement at Liberty Mutual and under various names elsewhere. It obliges the carrier to use OEM parts on a covered repair. On a vehicle with tight panel-fit tolerances and camera-dependent driver assistance, this is the single most useful add-on available.

Endorsement 2: gap or loan/lease payoff

Model Y depreciation in the first two years has been steep and unpredictable, and price cuts on new inventory have repeatedly pushed recent buyers underwater. If you financed with less than 20 percent down or leased, gap coverage is not optional. Buying it from your auto carrier is generally far cheaper than from the dealer.

Endorsement 3: rental reimbursement with a real daily limit

Model Y repair cycle times run longer than average because of parts routing and shop certification requirements. A $30-per-day rental limit will not cover a comparable vehicle, and a 30-day cap can expire before your car is finished. Buy the higher daily limit and the longest available term.

Endorsement 4: full glass coverage where available

The Model Y windshield houses the forward camera assembly, so replacement requires calibration in addition to the glass itself. Where a state permits a zero-deductible glass endorsement, it typically pays for itself with a single claim.

What you can skip

Roadside assistance is redundant if your Tesla warranty roadside coverage is active or you carry AAA. Custom parts and equipment coverage is irrelevant on a stock vehicle. Medical payments coverage is often duplicative if you have solid health insurance, though in no-fault states the PIP requirement is separate and mandatory.

Model Y Coverage Guide: FAQ

Do I need gap insurance on a leased Model Y?

Most Tesla leases include a form of gap protection in the lease agreement. Read the contract before buying it separately, and buy it immediately if the lease does not include it.

Is my home wall connector covered by auto insurance?

Usually not. A hardwired wall connector is generally a fixture covered by homeowners insurance. Tesla Insurance is the notable exception and includes connector coverage in the auto policy.

Should I carry comprehensive on an older Model Y?

Yes. Glass and sensor claims do not become cheaper as the car ages, and comprehensive premiums are a small fraction of the total.
